Cymbalta for Depression

Cymbalta (duloxetine) is used to treat depression characterized by panic attacks. The drug is prescribed in capsules of 60-120 mg once a day.

Duloxetine represents a reuptake inhibitor of serotonin and norepinephrine. In addition to this effect, it has no pronounced effect on reuptake of dopamine. In other words, the drug’s effect is based on increasing serotonergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission in the CNS.

Cymbalta is a modern medicine, which action is based on a double impact on different degrees of depression severity. The drug is characterized by fast achievement of therapeutic effect. Within the first week of treatment, lasting antidepressant effect is developed. Throughout the whole dosing phase, Cymbalta continuously improves condition of patients.

Duloxetine is prescribed as a means to fight depression and painful form of diabetic neuropathy. Also, it was investigated for effectiveness in fight against migraine. Studies showed that the drug is able to raise pain threshold and cope with chronic pain. Significant improvements were observed in more than half of subjects.

Cymbalta is available in capsules for oral administration. They should be swallowed whole, while no chewing or crushing is allowed. Avoid mixing capsules with food or liquids. Maximum dose is 120 mg / day, which should be divided into two stages.

Antidepressant Cymbalta to ease pain of chemotherapy

Patients with cancer who receive certain types of chemotherapy often feel painful tingling in limbs. The phenomenon is called peripheral neuropathy. A new study found antidepressant Cymbalta can be the first drug to alleviate this condition. In a small study, 59% of patients with peripheral neuropathy reported a relief after taking duloxetine. Among those receiving placebo pills, the figure is 39%. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy involves tingling and numbness in hands and feet. Typically, it is a side effect of chemotherapeutic agents, such as platinum compounds or taxanes. Approximately, neuropathy occurs in 30% of patients treated with the drugs. A specified side effect forces patients to discontinue treatment.

Cymbalta is assumed to relieve neuropathy, while changing the level of brain neurotransmitters associated with nervous system function. The study claims the drug is already used to treat diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
